Scheduled road closures to be aware of this January

Five of the Isle of Wight’s busiest roads will close on Monday (January 5), as major highway and utility works resume following the Christmas and New Year break.

Roadworks will see main roads shut through Wroxall, Park Road in Cowes, Binstead Hill in Ryde, Yaverland Road in Sandown, and Upper High Street in Newport.

Yaverland Road in Sandown will see a closure from 9am on January 5 until 6pm on January 7 for utility works.

There are also a raft of temporary road closures across towns and villages including Porchfield, Ryde, Chale, Niton, Whitwell, Seaview, Newport, Totland, Bembridge, Sandown, and Newchurch during January.

Among the earliest works will be on Whitehouse Cross, Porchfield, scheduled for one shift between January 2 and January 6, with the entire length of the road shut to all vehicles while carriageway repairs are carried out. The exact closure area will be shown by on-street signage, and an alternative route will be signposted.

In Ryde, Rowland Lane will be closed for one shift between January 5 and January 9 for structure works, with on-street signs showing the closure area and a detour route marked out.

Kennel Lane in Chale and Newport Road in Niton will both be closed for one shift between January 5 and January 7 for carriageway repairs, with the whole length of both roads shut to vehicles.

Whitwell’s Ventnor Road faces a night-time closure for carriageway repairs between January 7 and January 9, while Oakhill Road in Seaview will be fully closed for two shifts during the same period for tree works. For both, signage will clarify the closure and the alternative routes.

Newport will be hit by a series of temporary restrictions. Scarrots Lane will be closed from 9am on January 7 until 6pm on January 9 for utility works, with a temporary revocation of the one-way restriction to manage traffic flow. Long Lane will also be closed between 9.30am and 3.30pm on January 7 for utility works. Weston Lane in Totland will shut from 8am on January 5 until 4pm on January 9 for similar works.

Meanwhile, Peacock Hill in Bembridge closes from 8am on January 5 until 6pm on January 24, with no alternative route available.

In Ryde, Deacons Lane will be shut at all times for two weeks between January 12 and January 23 for structures work.

Additional closures include High Street in Newchurch for one shift between January 14 and January 16 and another closure of Kennel Lane, Chale, during those dates for carriageway repairs.

Finally, phased closure of West Street in Newport will be in place from 7am on January 12 until 3pm on January 30, with a revocation of the one-way restriction and signed detours.

Embankment Road in Bembridge will also be shut from January 12 to January 30 for utility works.
