Water Sports in Isle Of Wight

With a total of 57 miles of coast line, much of which consist of beautiful beaches, it is no surprise that the Isle of Wight is the perfect place to enjoy some water sports. An Island of 147 square miles, surrounded by water, that depending on tide and wind is sheltered on one side and ferocious on the other, creates the ideal location for a variety of different watersports.

The Isle of Wight is famous for its sailing and considered to have some of the best waters in the world for doing so. Taking to the water is a great way to see a different side of the island and its coastlines, whilst enjoying the beautiful water of The Solent.

Boat hire is available throughout the island and is great fun for all the family. With sailing schools and lessons available to all, anyone can get involved whether you are an experienced sailor or complete novice.

There are great surfing spots to be found on the southern part of the Island.
Compton Bay - Considered one of the best all round spots on the entire Island for surfing. Great wave sailing location. Can be difficult to walk your kit down the Cliff steps.
Freshwater Bay - offering one of the longest rides on the island, it is for experienced surfers only due to the rocks.
Brighstone - offers stunning scenery and even better surf.
Niton - for experienced surfers. With shallow rocks and strong rips it can be dangerous.
Ventnor - Great breaks when the wind is right, but can be very inconsistent.
Shanklin - The best time to surf here is the winter, but with strong rips it can be dangerous.
Yaverland / Sandown - great location - can be a wave sailing location, but can also offer flat water. This is where the White Air Extreme sports festival is held in August/September
Bembridge - Sandy beach, if you catch the tide wrong - you maybe walking your kit quite a way out before it gets deep enough! Great sailing if the conditions are right!
