P1130333 (2)In a game notable for a controversial refereeing decision, West Wight beat Vectis at Cowes Enterprise College by the best goal of five through a Charlie Smeeton hat trick.

Vectis struck first in the 18th minute through a Rory Day freekick that fell out of West Wight keeper Ryan Young’s outstretched hands and into the back of the net (1-0).

5 minutes later came one of the strangest decisions ever seen in Island football when referee Ben Orton awarded a goal a couple of minutes after waving play on. A Charlie Smeeton shot struck the underside of the crossbar and seemingly crossed the goal line before being caught by Vectis keeper Jordan Wicks. Orton, who was unsighted, failed to award the goal to West Wight, leading to vociferous protests from the away side and their captain Adam Millar being sinbinned. However, after a further minute of play, the referee stopped the game to consult the linesman and goalkeeper after which the goal was given (1-1).

Vectis manager Reece Biedler said of the incident:

“I was completely baffled by it. The referee should have stuck by his initial decision. You can change your mind in professional football using VAR, but not in a grassroots game.”

10 minutes before half time Aaron Lake restored the Vectis lead when he had a shot blocked by Young before knocking in the rebound (2-1). However, Lake was then forced to leave the pitch with an ankle injury, which turned the game in West Wight’s favour.

The 2nd half belonged to the away side. First, Smeeton equalized on the hour mark through a tap in from the edge of the 6-yard box (2-2). 10 minutes later, Smeeton won the game for West Wight with a clever free kick that went under the Vectis wall (3-0) and ended the home side’s interest in the Senior Cup in the 1st round.
