3 appliances are in attendance alongside a fire officer at the scene on Pan Lane, with thick black smoke being seen from across Newport.
Crews are using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to control the blaze, with some explosions being heard from the scene in streets nearby.
The smoke appears to be rising from a container unit in a compound at the rear of the building.
UPDATED @ 19:43 – Firefighters from Newport and Cowes have laid hoses to nearby fire hydrants and are running them the short distance to the rear of the MOT garage.
Crews are tackling the blaze from both front and the rear of the container in order to prevent it spreading to nearby properties just 15 metres away.
UPDATE @ 19:55 – Firefighters are using an Ultra High Pressure Lance to pierce the metal of the container and cool the gases within, making it safer for them to open the container and control the fire within.
Island Echo understands that old car parts have caught alight within the metal box.
UPDATED @ 20:19 – With the fire brought largely under control, crews are dampening down both inside the container and the ground surrounding it.
Several police units along with neighbourhood PCSO’s have arrived at the scene on Pan Lane and are conducting inquiries.
