Simeon Street Recreation Ground in Ryde will become a Pay & Display car park for the summer months to enable beachgoers to park locally during the ongoing Southern Water works at Appley.
Repairs to a collapsed sewer, which have been underway since January, are set to continue until at least October. As a result, access to the main car park at Appley and surrounding on-street parking will continue to be blocked, significantly reducing the available parking in the area.
In an effort to encourage visitors to the seaside and to ensure they can park, Southern Water has worked with the Isle of Wight Council to open up off-street parking nearby.
From next Friday (23rd July), motorists will be able to park at Simeon Street Rec with reasonable charges; £5 for up to 5 hours and £10 for up to 12 hours. Access will be via the bottom of West Hill Road.
It is currently unclear when the new arrangement will end, but it is presumed it will continue for the duration of the Summer holidays and into September.
The relocation of parking will likely mean a shift in where visitors descend onto the beach, which could boost local business in the Cornwall Slip area of Ryde – albeit to the detriment of those businesses at Appley.
