REVEALED: FLOATING BRIDGE HAS SPENT 295 DAYS OUT OF ACTION SINCE ENTERING SERVICE


A new report published by the Isle of Wight Council has revealed that Floating Bridge No.6 has spent the equivalent of 295 days out of service since it arrived on the Island in 2017.

The Isle of Wight Council has launched legal action against Burness Corlett Three Quays (Southampton) Limited and Mainstay Marine Solutions Limited in relation to the troubled Floating Bridge, which has become somewhat of a local joke given the number of issues it has experienced since entering service on 13th May 2017.

These issues include a lack of adequate clearance over the chains at all states of the tide; electrical faults; excessive noise; mechanical/system failures; ramp hinge and ram failures, excessive wear to the guide wheels and hydraulic system issues.

It is now known that the service has been pulled on no less than 74 separate occasions in less than 4 years, resulting in a total downtime of 274 days and 348 hours – the equivalent of 295.5 days in total.

The Isle of Wight Council’s Scrutiny Committee will consider a report on the current situation regarding Cowes Floating Bridge on Tuesday 9th March.

The report says that if an agreement cannot be reached at mediation (or for some reason, any one of the parties decides it is not willing to enter mediation), the Council will need to issue court (or arbitration) proceedings.
