Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was called to an address on Monkton Street at 7.10pm last night (Sunday).
At least seven fire appliances were alerted from across the Island, including an aerial ladder which was used to douse the flames from height.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: “Crews from Ryde, Sandown, Newport, Shanklin and Cowes were called out, and were supported with the aerial ladder and water carrier vehicles.
“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used jets and hose reels to extinguish the fire which caused the roof of the property to collapse.
“The scene was dampened down before crews returned to station, leaving police to guard the scene ahead of a joint investigation today.”
Officers from the Isle of Wight Council’s housing team were on hand to assist affected residents.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service also attended, alongside the police.
